Drains, Ditches and a Big Step Forward for The Pokhara Project

August 28, 2025 | News

It’s not often that drainage makes the headlines, but at The Pokhara Project site in Nepal, we’re celebrating something that might not be glamorous, but is absolutely essential.

Initial road drainage works have now been completed, a critical piece of infrastructure that ensures the land will be safe, stable, and ready for the start of construction. Good drainage means fewer risks of landslides, land and property damage, flooding of the property and neighbouring properties, safer foundations, and a lower-maintenance site for many generations to come.

Not only are the drainage works a win to celebrate, they were part of a bigger local Government project to redo the adjoining road, making the property much more accessible – a huge win for The Pokhara Project!

The works were completed in collaboration with the local government and local contractors, supporting our commitment to partnering locally where we can. Strengthening connection with the local community and neighbours helps support local buy-in, contributing to the long-term security and safety of The Pokhara Project and its future students, residents and staff. This milestone is one of those unseen but vital steps that makes everything else possible. Because of this work, we can now move confidently into the first phase of construction.

We’ll admit, we never thought we could get so excited about infrastructure! From the outside, drainage ditches and roads might not look like much. But beneath the surface, they tell a story: of progress, of community, and of the foundations being laid, not just for buildings, but for freedom and opportunity for women and children in Nepal.

Thanks to the generosity and trust of our supporters, every gift, every partnership, every voice raised for freedom is helping to turn plans into reality.

A few of the Give Freedom International team members are packing their bags for a trip to Nepal! The trip is part of our annual Field Partner Health Check, and a chance for our team to meet with selected contractors to finalise details to start building. And of course, we can’t wait to connect with our wonderful partners at 3 Angels Nepal and see more of their amazing impact in person. It doesn’t get much more exciting than that for us right now!
